The new Hoover band director is Rory Garfinkel. Bio coming soon!

My name is Rori Garfinkel and I'm the new Band Director at Hoover Middle School.  Previous to teaching at Hoover, I taught general music, band and orchestra for 4 years at Simonds Elementary (also in the San Jose Unified School District).  Prior to teaching at Simonds, I did my student teaching at Hoover and I'm super excited to be back.  I always envisioned teaching Middle School and hoped to come back to Hoover.

I studied violin in my hometown at UC Santa Cruz.  After graduating, I decided to persue music education and received my teaching credential from San Jose State in 2010.  I've always felt lucky getting to teach young people something I'm passionate about.  What's better than being able to make music together?  Having a close relationship with Mr. McKenzie, the band teacher at Lincoln High School, will help me prepare my students for playing in his ensembles once they graduate from Hoover and I'm excited to help them continue their journey in music!

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family--especially in the outdoors.  We love to go backpacking, skiing and bike riding.  When I'm feeling extra adventerous, I like to go salsa dancing.  Students will find out that I listen to a variety of different music from Beethoven to Pop.  Favorite artists include The Beatles, Fall Out Boy, B.O.B, Taylor Swift, and the list goes on.

So far, I've really enjoyed getting to know the students.  I'm in aw of their talent and their willingness to work hard.  I look forward to seeing what we accomplish this year!
